520 3 |a
Trust is, as the banking institution Deutsche Bank put it in an advertising slogan in 1996, “the beginning of everything”. However, detecting effective mechanisms to create a highly trusted banking institute still remains a challenge as trust is a complex and multi-dimensional phenomenon. The dissertation’s results show empirically that trust is a matter of importance across levels and a multi-level phenomenon. Trust interventions have to take place at both the micro and the macro level. Furthermore there is a stakeholder-specific nature of trust, by which each stakeholder requires different antecedents of trust to build trusting business relationships. In addition, this work refers to legitimacy theory and points out that crucial predictors of trust are actions based on legitimate criteria. Banks are encouraged to use the dissertation’s results, which lead to a proposal for an integrated concept of trust and recommendations for actions that can be taken for its implementation in banks.
